aso oke

Unique to the Yoruba people of Nigeria, Aso Oke is a handwoven textile. Traditionally, it has been used to create clothing for weddings and other important occasions, including Agbada (men's gowns), Fila (hats), Iro and Buba (women's wrappers and blouses), and gele (head tie).

Thankfully, innovative sewing techniques are enabling designers to experiment with more Aso Oke outfit ideas for occasions other than weddings, like business and other less celebratory occasions.

Here are some tips on how to style your DFL  Aso Oke pieces for everyday looks:

Aso Oke Skirts: Aso oke skirts can be versatile and one of the easiest ways to wear Aso Oke is a midi pencil skirt which  works just as a denim skirt would due to the fabric weight and texture of Aso Oke. Aso Oke skirts can be paired with crop tops, t-shirts, blouses or a button down white shirt depending on your preference. You can also add some accessories such as belts or scarves to complete the look.

Style Notes: When hanging out on the weekend, comfort is key but i definately want to look stylish, i imagine myself  rocking this ARA aso oke skirt for a sunday brunch,  with a graphic tee, a cute clutch like this DFL denim clutch and Sneakers ( for comfort of course) Is there anything more symbolic of comfort and style than this? .

Aso Oke Bags: Aso Oke bags are perfect for adding a statement piece to your outfit.  They make good conversation pieces because it is not everyday you see an Aso Oke bag or clutch. You can pair it with a simple dress or jeans and a t-shirt.

Style Notes:  I have always tagged myself a lazy dresser so overcome that i have a couple of statement pieces like the Osayi Aso Oke clutch to help perk up my basic outfit, one statement pieces will make your outfit go from “good to knockout.”  in a flash.

Aso Oke Dresses: Aso Oke is a very structured textured fabric as sure, styles for aso oke dresses are best for tapered dresses, but for more fluid styles, aso oke can be mixed with fabrics like denim, ankara, adire. With these more fluid styles, dresses can be styled in different ways depending on the occasion. For everyday looks, you can pair it with sandals or sneakers for a casual look. For more formal occasions, you can wear heels and add some statement jewelry.

Style Notes: I turn to tried-and-true looks when I'm really stumped on what to wear. Thankfully, boubous are fashionable and timeless. While a full Aso Oke boubou might not look good, a denim and Aso Oke marriage like this DFL long denim boubou offers a casually cool vibe that you can switch up with trainers or maintain the rich aunty vibes with heels!

It's important to bear in mind that the best way to style Aso Oke clothing for casual looks is to keep things simple and let the fabric speak for itself. I sincerely hope that these styling suggestions will inspire you to think outside the box when styling your Aso Oke clothing!
